Multiple Sclerosis in the Hispanic Population
Status:
Open.
Sponsors:
Done in part with Scholarships from the Foundation of the Consortium of MS Centers
Type of Study and Brief Description:
Investigator Initiated
Background:
In this study we wish to address the role that the environment may play in influencing the course of MS. To do this we propose to analyze the disease course of Multiple Sclerosis in Hispanics, comparing groups of patients based upon where they lived in their formative years. We propose to analyze the different facets of MS in patients of Hispanic descent who were born and lived their formative years, up to age 15, in Central and South America before emigrating to the US. We will compare these measures with those obtained in Hispanic subjects and also in non-Hispanic subjects who were born and resided within the continental US for their entire life, The comparison of Hispanic subjects born in distinct locales will allow for a preliminary assessment of the role of epigenetics (environmental influences) on the predisposition of given individuals to not only developing MS, but also on the type of disease they have.
