Rituximab (RituxanŽ) Treatment In Primary Progressive MS
Status:
CLOSED. Study in follow-up
Sponsors:
Genentech
Type of Study and Brief Description:
A Phase II/III randomized, double-blind, parallel-group placebo controlled multicenter study to determine safety and efficacy of an anti-B cell monoclonal antibody in adults with primary progressive MS. The drug is administered intravenously at various intervals over a 96 week course, with follow-up at 122 weeks.
Background:
Rituxan is a monoclonal antibody that targets and neutralizes B cells, a type of lymphocyte that produces antibodies. There is evidence that B cells, and perhaps some of the antibodies they produce, might contribute to disease in patients with primary progressive MS. This treatment will test whether neutralizing these B cells will be beneficial for this group of patients.
